Cableway or Platteklip Gorge — the honest comparison. Costs, times, fitness, the wind that closes the mountain, and which of the four main routes suits you.
Table Mountain does not care about your schedule. That is the first thing locals learn and the last thing visitors accept. The cableway closes for wind more often than tourists expect, the tablecloth cloud arrives without warning, and the only people who reliably reach the summit are the ones who kept the day flexible.
This is not a choice between a lazy option and a virtuous one. Cableway and hike are two different stories about the same mountain. Pick the story you actually want to tell.
The cableway: five minutes, one great view
The rotating cars lift you 700-odd metres in about five minutes, running roughly 08:30 to 18:00 depending on season, with returns around R420–R450 for adults. Buy online for a dated ticket, arrive before 09:00 or after 15:30, and check the operator's wind status the morning of — not the night before.
It is the right choice with children, with limited time, with anyone who wants sundowners at the top without a headlamp descent. And it is genuinely spectacular: the Atlantic on one side, the Cape Flats and Hottentots Holland on the other, dassies sunning themselves on the paths.

Platteklip Gorge: the honest, unglamorous climb
Platteklip is the direct route: two to three hours of relentless stone staircase up the front face, no scrambling, no navigation puzzles, no shade after 09:00. It is not technical and it is not easy. Take two litres of water per person, start by 07:00 in summer, and plan to ride the cableway down so your knees still work tomorrow.
The reward is not the view — the cableway sells the same view. The reward is arriving somewhere on your own legs, which is a different feeling entirely.

Two better first hikes than Table Mountain
Lion's Head takes 90 minutes return, spirals with 360-degree views the whole way, and has chains and ladders you can bypass on the easier path — it is the best sunset hike in the city and the reason full-moon nights fill up. Kloof Corner is 45 minutes to the classic photograph of the Twelve Apostles and the City Bowl, and it is achievable in trainers.
If you have three days in Cape Town, one of these plus the cableway usually beats spending a whole morning on Platteklip.
Skeleton Gorge, India Venster and when not to go alone
Skeleton Gorge climbs from Kirstenbosch through forest and ladders to Maclear's Beacon — beautiful, slippery in winter, and a genuine navigation exercise near the top. India Venster is exposed scrambling with real fall risk and should only be done with a guide. Every year visitors get benighted or lost on these routes because a sunny car park said nothing about the cloud rolling in at 900 metres.
Practical safety, plainly: hike in a group of three or more, tell someone your route, keep phones charged, save Table Mountain National Park emergency numbers, and turn back when the cloud closes in. Our guided ascents exist for exactly this reason — a local who knows which face is sheltered today is worth more than any amount of gear.

Which month, which route
November to March gives long dry days but fierce southeaster winds and cableway closures; hike very early. April, May and September are the local secret — still air, clear light, empty paths. June to August brings green mountains and dramatic cloud between fronts, with brilliant hiking on the clear days in between.
Whichever route you choose, build the mountain into your first two days rather than your last. That way the weather gets a second chance to cooperate.
